Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps
Air Source Heat Pumps
Heat your home with energy absorbed from the AIR around you. Reduce your energy bills and cut your carbon footprint with Eco Dragon,we can supply, install, service and repair any heat pump anywhere in Cornwall! How Does it Work? Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they produce from the ground, air, or water is done so by using far less energy than traditional gas or oil boilers and at a reduced cost meaning much lower fuel bills and a greater reduction on carbon emissions into the environment. |
The Renewable Heat Incentive
The Renewable Heat Incentive is a new government scheme started in Spring 2014 for householders who have renewable heating systems installed in their property. You will be paid for the amount of renewable heat you produce in kW’s, and you will be paid this amount for 7 years. For an Air Source Heat Pump this amount is 19.2 p/kWh. (subject to change) |
There are two main types of air source heat pump system:
An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. So they are more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time. An air-to-air system produces warm air which is circulated by fans to heat your home, but are unlikely to provide you with hot water as well. |
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Heat your home with energy absorbed from the GROUND around you.
Eco Dragon also installs Kensa Ground Source Heat Pumps to help you heat your home AND reduce your energy bills! How does it work? Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground by circulating fluid through buried pipes in horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes. They concentrate heat by using a vapour compression cycle, and they transfer heat into buildings to provide heating and hot water without burning fossil fuels. |
Ground source Heat Pumps provide the lowest running cost of ANY heating system!
The GSHP's that we at Eco Dragon install use a very small amount of electricity to transfer a large amount of natural heat from the ground into your home.

Ground Source Heat Pumps can provide a number of great benefits! Some of these Benefits include:
- Lower energy bills! considerably lower if you are using a GSHP to replace oil, coal, LPG or direct electric heating.
- You no longer need to have your fuel delivered or go somewhere to buy it! GSHP's get their fuel from the ground.
- They reduce your carbon emissions!
- Your annual maintenance costs will be reduced!
- You will earn a significant income from the Renewable Heat Incentive! The same incentive stated above that supports the ASHP.
- Our professional installers are able to install a safe, silent and invisible heating system! Without any planning restrictions!
Savings
How much you can save will depend on what system you use now, as well as what you are replacing it with. Your savings will be affected by:
How much you can save will depend on what system you use now, as well as what you are replacing it with. Your savings will be affected by:
Your heat distribution system
If you have the opportunity, underfloor heating can be more efficient than radiators because the water doesn’t need to be so hot. If underfloor heating isn’t possible, use the largest radiators you can. Your old heating system If your old heating system was inefficient, you are more likely to see lower running costs with a new heat pump. Using the controls Learn how to control the system so you can get the most out of it. You will probably need to set the heating to come on for longer hours, but you might be able to set the thermostat lower and still feel comfortable. Your installer should explain to you how to control the system so you can use it most effectively. |
Your fuel costs
You will still have to pay fuel bills with a heat pump because it is powered by electricity, but you will save on the fuel you are replacing. If the fuel you are replacing is expensive you are more likely to make a saving. Water heating If the heat pump is providing hot water then this could limit the overall efficiency. You might want to consider solar water heating to provide hot water in the summer and help keep your heat pump efficiency up. An Air Source Heat Pump could save over £500 a year, on your heating bills and almost 5 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year, however savings will vary depending on the fuel being replaced. |
